Practical Experience
We cater for all healthcare students. This includes students who are studying Medicine, Dentistry, Midwifery, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Pharmacy and Radiology. You will be placed in the relevant department. Medical students can choose which type of ward they would like to be placed in.
We try to limit the number of students on a particular ward. With other elective companies, students often feel that they are crammed onto a ward and have to compete for practical procedures. Here at PEA, we don’t want you to feel like another number lost amongst the sea of other students. We want smaller, intimate groups to allow relationships to grow, bonds to form and connections to be established. OK, enough of the mushy stuff! On a serious note, we want to provide you with the best experience possible, so we have purposefully limited the number of students in a room and on a ward to ensure you have the opportunity to experience as much as possible.
The hospitals are located within 5-25 minutes walk of the accommodation (dependant on the hospital). We deliberately chose hospitals close to the accommodation so you are free to come and go as you please and do not have to rely on public transport or a shared coach. However, if you’re having a lazy day, you can take the local form of transport called ”Boda-Boda” which is a motorcycle and will cost you between £0.20p-£0.50p maximum depending on the distance. Uber is also an option if you like to travel in style
A Typical 4 week Healthcare Placement
This will take place Monday -Thursday, 9am – 3pm, you are welcome to stay longer if you need to complete projects or to further your experience.
Fridays are flexible and you will be scheduled to take part in the community experiences such as helping to paint a classroom for the local school children. Teaching the children at the orphanages basic English. Helping support local sustainable projects such as Bee-Keeping (for honey production) or tree planting or other sustainable methods of farming. These experiences are flexible and of course you do not have to take part but we strongly encourage that you do as it will immerse you into the true Ugandan culture and traditions. Not only will you come away with a deeper understanding of the local ways, but you are guaranteed to meet so many fantastic and inspiring people along the way.
Breakfast and Dinner is served at the accommodation where there is plenty of indoor and outdoor space to dine and relax. Lunch is provided in form of a packed lunch which you can take with you every morning to placement.
After placement you’ll have free time to explore the local area. Our PEA houses are located in the best areas! You will be within walking distance to cafe’s, restaurants, bars and night clubs. Or why not take an Uber to the local beach to watch the sunset or take a dip in the ocean. If you don’t feel like venturing out, the PEA house is equipped with a pool and sun loungers and there will be plenty of other healthcare students around to catch up with.
On the weekends we have organised activities. You will be picked up usually around 9am on a Saturday and transported to a destination of fun, adventure and discovery! Sundays…you can REST!
